J'avais dit qu'il émanait une certaine beauté dans le portrait de la mort sur le premier album de Cloak Of Altering. Ancient Paths Through The Timeless Voids change radicalement de ton : c'est un exutoire de la haine pure. Mories fait feu (j'emploie le terme en conscience de cause) de tout bois, s'assurant que son black metal soit le plus agressif qui soit avec du power violence ("All I See Is Dead Stars") ou une vision particulière de la synthwave ("The War Has Finally Found Us"). Explosif !

N'allez pas croire en lisant un titre comme ZERO DEVIL que Cloak of Altering s'est mis à croire en une rédemption : le but de cet album est d'invoquer le Diable du Zéro, de le faire sortir de son trou noir. Dans la continuité de son prédécesseur, les atmosphères astrales psychédéliques et anxiogènes font leur retour le rendant parfois presque symphonique ("Tired Drones Scan The Sea", "I Exhale The Dream"), mais le black metal est encore plus démoniaque, frôlant même le powerviolence. 100% evil !

Founded upon ashes of a discontinued Mories project, Ophiuchus, Cloak of Altering began and continued as an exercise in blurring the seams between the organic and synthetic. This premise, combined with Mories’ insatiable fascination with Swans-esque noise, drone and his tight, exalted songwriting, resulted in a project that felt both extremely experimental and driven by emotion. There’s a sense of neurotic urgency to anything Mories does and the new CoA album is no exception.
